Tenzin Gyatso (1935-), the Dalai Lama (Mongolian for "Ocean of Wisdom"), is believed to be a reincarnation of Buddha. He is the spiritual and political leader of Tibet's six million Lamaistic Buddhists.

In 1950, the Chinese invasion of independent Tibet forced this holy man into permanent exile. "Suffering is the first step to liberation," he wrote about his exodus. In his books, his life, and his teachings, he continues to teach and live the example of spreading compassion, love, and kindness to everyone.
