One of my favorite movies, Edward Scissorhands (1990), features one of my favorite actors, Johnny Depp (1963-). Born John Christopher Depp II on this day in Owensboro, Kentucky, he rarely (if ever) gives a bad performance.
Of his role as Edward Scissorhands, Depp said:"One of the most incredible moments I've ever had was sitting in Vincent (Price)'s trailer...I was showing him this first edition book I have of the complete works of (Edgar Allen) Poe with really amazing illustrations.
Notoriously press-shy, the chain-smoking, tattooed actor played electric guitar with several garage bands as a teen. The part-Cherokee Depp broke into films with small parts in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and Platoon (1986), then starred as the teen hunk in the hit TV series 21 Jump Street (1987-1990).
About his roles of of oddball loners and outsiders, he said, "I am doing things that are true to me. The only thing I have a problem with is being labelled."
"I think satisfaction … total and utter satisfaction … with your work is death for an actor."
In 1998, Depp met Parisian Chanel model, Vanessa Paradis. He moved to the Left Bank and became a passionate father.
"I'm an old-fashioned guy... I want to be an old man with a beer belly sitting on a porch, looking at a lake or something," he once said.
