Uniquely beautiful with close-set eyes, Streisand admitted to Playboy in 1977 that she once considered altering her famous aquiline nose, but rejected the idea when she was told surgery might change the sound and resonance of her voice.
"Beauty," she claimed, "is in the heart of the beholder rather than in the eye of the beholder."
A woman's rights advocate, with a voice unlike anyone else, Ms. Streisand, born in 1942, celebrates her birthday today.
