Golf legend Jack William Nicklaus (1940-) was born on this day in Columbus, Ohio. At age 10, he carded a 51 in the first nine holes he played.
A highly-competitive player who dominated the sport, he once said, "Nobody ever remembers who finished second at anything."
Nicklaus was called “the greatest golfer ever” in 1980 by Sports Illustrated. His methodical approach and slow pace of play were legendary. His ability to concentrate then hit the ball straighter and further than anyone else was almost superhuman.
"I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head." said the great tactician.
Nicklaus joined the PGA tour in 1962. With a career that spanned 24 years, he won 18 majors--three Open Championships, four US Opens, five US PGA titles and six Masters. With a passion for golf's fundamentals and strategy, he has also designed over 160 golf courses throughout the world.
Upon winning a 1984 PGA tournament, the beloved "Golden Bear" remarked, "It’s hard not to play golf that’s up to Jack Nicklaus standards when you are Jack Nicklaus."
