April 16 ~  All Decisive Blows Left Is Right

"These are days when no one should rely unduly on his 'competence.' Strength lies in improvisation. All the decisive blows are struck left-handed."  ~ Walter Benjamin

celebrate the power of the individual! We live in a right-handed world. Ever watch a lefty contort to be able to write in a three-ring binder or spiral notebook?

About ninety percent of people are right-handed; the other ten seem to prefer using their left hand. More men than women are lefties and it used to be that a natural left-hander was forced by parents and teachers to switch to the right hand.

In almost every language the right hand means permanence and reliability. In Russia, left is called "levja," an insulting term; it comes from the phrase "no levo" which means "sneaky." How gauche! (Gauche, by the way is literally French for left.)  Are these people in their right minds? Or out in left field?

The Good News? Being left-handed did not stop Albert Einstein, Babe Ruth, Pablo Picasso, Michelangelo, Ben Franklin or Harry Truman. Napoleon Bonaparte, Alexander the Great, and Albert Schweitzer were lefties, too. Paul McCartney played his bass left-handed...Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain were lefties, too... And Jimmy Connors and Monica Seles had no trouble connecting on the tennis court.

Right on lefties!
